Graduate Assistant Psychology Department (100/200-level courses)

Description
The psychology department is hiring one full-time graduate assistant (GA) position to provide assistance with some of the large 100- and 200-level psychology courses, primarily PSYC 110 Introduction to Psychology and PSYC 230 Human Development. The GA will be assigned to one primary course each semester. They will provide assistance with these courses as well as offer study sessions and tutoring related to psychology and writing. They will also work with other GAs on completing department projects aimed at improving the learning experience of psychology students.
Duties and Responsibilities
Duties may differ slightly across instructors. Examples of typical activities include:
- Attending class sessions for the large lecture course
- Assisting instructors with preparing materials and running activities during class
- Assisting instructors with managing items on the Blackboard page
- Assisting instructors with grading assignments and/or exams
- Leading study groups or review sessions
- Delivering occasional 鈥渕ini-lectures鈥 on topics of the GAs expertise
- Tutoring students on course content and formal psychology writing (APA style)
- Working with other GAs on departmental projects (e.g., Info Sessions for psychology students on how to prepare for academic advising meetings or how to prepare to apply to graduate school)
- Ancillary duties include giving an exam if a professor is ill or attending a conference, proctoring make-up exams, and other departmental teaching-related assistance
Qualifications
The GA is required to have prior coursework in psychology and preferably have completed introduction to psychology and human development courses. The following types of experiences are not required but may be helpful in this position: experience in teaching/tutoring/training, experience providing feedback to others, and/or experience in customer service or other types of client support positions that require effective communication.
Contribution to Professional Development
As a GA, you will gain first-hand experience assisting with the teaching a college-level course in psychology. You will learn about:
- Planning and carrying out a lesson plan
- Using rubrics to grade assignments and exams
- Giving constructive feedback to students to help them improve their learning
- The mechanics of good writing and how to revise poorer writing for a better product
- Mentoring and building a sense of community in a large classroom
- Public speaking
