Graduate Assistant Military Resource Center Academic Coach

Full-time (20 hours per week). Two positions are available for 2025-26.

Primary Purpose

The Military Resource Center (MRC) at Âé¶¹Ô­´´ provides support to military-connected students as a hub for pertinent information and peer-to-peer support regarding higher education, Âé¶¹Ô­´´, and navigating military educational benefits. The Academic Coach proactively supports military-connected students develop habits that support long-term academic success and integration into the campus community.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support implementation of outreach initiatives developed by the MRC Coordinator
  • Provide higher education transition support and academic coaching as requested in individual and group settings
  • Work collaboratively with the VetSuccess on Campus (VSOC) program
  • Become knowledgeable about and liaise with various campus departments, services, and resources including Student Veterans of America, Academic Success Center, Academic Advising, Disability Access, Registrar’s Office, and Learning for Life to better make targeted referrals for students utilizing the MRC
  • Research and provide summaries of current trends and best practices for veteran student support in higher education
  • Present to college departments and constituencies on the needs of individuals and military-connected students in general
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Required – accepted degree candidate, enrolled full-time in program of study (minimum 6 credits; maximum 9 credits); strong interpersonal skills; effective communication skills; proficiency with MS Office suite
  • Preferred – experience working with veterans; degree program in education, counseling, or related field

Learning Outcomes

The GA will:

  • Enhance understanding of veteran-to-campus transition theories and best practices
  • Develop skills in mentoring and coaching students to personal and academic success
  • Advance professional and personal understanding of military culture
  • Build connections to better understand common barriers to academic success among the veteran population including physical and mental trauma and best practices in accommodating and overcoming such barriers
  • Participate in research related to assessing veterans’ needs, presenting at local and regional meetings/conferences, and disseminating findings in reports and/or publications

Availability

20 hours of work per week. A mix of day, evening, and weekend hours is desirable. The time requirement is best met with flexible scheduling to meet student schedules within ranges of time established by the GA. Orientation occurs in mid to late August. Two positions are available for 2025-26.
