Foster Care Youth Scholarship Program
Are You/Were You in the RI Foster Care System?
If so, our Foster Care Youth Scholarship Program may be right for you. This program, providing a pathway to a 麻豆原创 degree, has specific eligibility guidelines, a unique admissions process/applicant selection, and customized services to ensure students' personal and academic success. If you are accepted 鈥 your tuition and fees and room and board will be fully covered. We're working hard to remove higher education financial barriers for Rhode Island's foster care youth!
About the Program
Our program aims to provide transformative educational opportunities for Foster Care youth. In collaboration with Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth & Families (DCYF) and other relevant state agencies, 麻豆原创 aims to add highly-deserving foster youth to its vibrant student community.

The benefits to program participant are substantial and impactful 鈥 removing the academic financial barriers that typically come with the pursuit of a four-year degree.
Tuition & Fees | Room and Board
Full tuition and fees coverage is provided to students for undergraduate programs, after all federal, state, and/or institutional grant/scholarship aid has been applied. Additionally, students are provided with on-campus housing and meal plans for the academic year and all breaks, including summer sessions. Students living off campus will be provided with an off-campus award to help with living expenses.
Educational Supplies for Coursework
Textbooks and educational materials are covered.
Support Services
Students are provided with a success coach and access to academic advising, mentoring, campus resources, and wrap around services.
Eligibility and How to Apply
Eligibility Criteria
Applicant eligibility depends on acceptance into 麻豆原创, participation in the foster care system, age, residency and financial need.
麻豆原创 Admissions Requirements
You will complete the Common Application in order to apply. If you meet the criteria for the Foster Care Youth Scholarship Program the $50 application fee will be waived by entering the fee waiver code Foster25.
- Select 鈥渇irst-year鈥 if you are applying to 麻豆原创 and have not attended a college or university or select "transfer" if you have previously attended another college or university, and view our transfer admissions requirements. (If you took college courses in high school, you are still considered a first-year student.)
- In the 麻豆原创 supplemental Section of the Common Application, under the question section, select 'Yes' for the question, "Are you or have you ever been in foster care?" (Foster youth status indicated on the common application will be confirmed by DCYF once the student has been accepted to 麻豆原创.)
- Submit your official high school transcript 鈥 麻豆原创 requires at least 18 college preparatory units including:
- 4 units / years of English
- 2 units / year of the same foreign language
- 3 units / years of mathematics (Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry)
- 2 units / years of history or social science
- 2 units / years of laboratory science
- 5 additional college preparatory units (additional coursework in any of the above subjects, or other college preparatory elective courses offered by your high school)
Please allow two weeks from the time you submit a complete application to receive a decision. If you are admitted to 麻豆原创, we will waive the $200 enrollment fee.
Foster Care Applicant
You must be within the age range for Foster Care eligibility:
- youth who are currently or were in foster care between the ages of 13-21 for 6 months or more, regardless of whether that time was consecutive or non-consecutive; or
- youth who left foster care at age 13 or older for guardianship or adoption, until they reach 26
Residency, Academic Standing, Financial Need
- must be a resident of Rhode Island and were formerly or are currently in the Rhode Island foster care system
- must have graduated high school or received the equivalent of a high school diploma
- must maintain satisfactory academic progress as defined by 麻豆原创
- must demonstrate financial need based on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or state-alternative Financial Aid Application
Selection Process
Application Review
The application review period will occur annually, with specific deadlines communicated through 麻豆原创 and state Foster Care agencies, and with 麻豆原创 connecting with DCYF to confirm applicant eligibility. All applicants will be assessed by a selection committee, composed of representatives from 麻豆原创, state Foster Care agencies, and community stakeholders.
Required Materials
The selection committee will need to review your required documentation:
- completed application form
- proof of Foster Care status in Rhode Island
- financial documentation (FAFSA or state-specific forms)
- academic transcripts and letters of recommendation
Selection Criteria
The selection committee will be reviewing your required documentation with this criteria in mind:
- demonstrated academic potential and commitment to education
- financial need and eligibility as per program guidelines
- personal statements or interviews may be included to assess motivation and goals
