Gisselle Torres

As a first-generation Latina, my journey into social work has been deeply personal. After the loss of my mother, I stepped into the role of caregiver and head of my family, an experience that shaped my resilience, compassion, and commitment to helping others navigate life’s most difficult moments. Now, as part of the MSW program, I understand the emotional and academic pressures students like me face but I also know the value and impact of this path. Through the support of The Atrévete Center of Excellence for Latinx/Hispanic Social Work Practice, I am proud to be part of a movement that builds a pipeline for Latinx students, uplifts our voices in research, and strengthens community-based clinical practice. I am here not only to grow, but to give back—because I know firsthand that the challenges we face are real, but so is the hope we bring to others.
